Incidentally, Turkish Airlines performed well apart from this. I always thought travellers shouldn’t let their passports out of sight. This meant an hour of nervous waiting for passengers in the airport transit area. The passports of all transiting passengers were collected and taken somewhere in a plastic bag to be processed with no explanation. Our luggage was checked through to Zagreb-Sydney, however our boarding passes had to be reissued in Jakarta. We recently travelled to and from Sydney to Zagreb, via Jakarta and Istanbul, with Turkish Airlines. Driving to the top of Scotland’s mainland to catch the ferry to Stromness is the beginning of a grand adventure. Orkney is wild, magical and spellbinding. Its Viking history is evident and the standing stones are older than Stonehenge. Aged 55, I ventured overseas for the first time and this wonder-filled destination was on my list. Despite the difficulties, it is well worth travelling beyond Havana. When President Obama lifted the embargo, not only goods but tourists came and life improved greatly for Cubans.

Cuba’s outstanding economic problem today is the US government’s embargo against them. Better yet, transport to and from the airport is abundant and therefore makes this airport an ideal gateway for those travelling to Sydney and surrounds.Lonely Planet guidebooks co-founder Tony Wheeler’s account of Cuba in his cover story, ( Traveller, July 1) needs an update. In essence, Sydney Airport is clean, efficient and well maintained. Check-in, baggage claims, immigrations, customs and security are generally smooth and painless however, like most international airports, standard airport processes can slow down during peak times. It is one of the oldest continuously running airports in the world and, having handled just over 35.9 million passengers in 2010, it is Australia’s busiest aerial hub.Ĭomprising three passenger terminals, namely International Terminal T1 and Domestic Terminals T2 and T3, Sydney Airport is home to a vast array of world-class shopping and dining venues, as well as a host of facilities and amenities for both tourists and business travellers.
